In 2006, and for a few years after that, though, you would never have known that crime was low in Rancho Cucamonga by walking into its police department headquarters. ![]() Among other factors contributing to that designation, the city with a population of about 174,000 residents maintains a crime rate that is well below the national average. The City of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., which covers 39 square miles in San Bernardino County about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, was ranked 42nd on Money magazine’s 2006 list of the 50 best places in the United States to live.
